PhD project
Subjects in Love. Gender Constructions and Semantics of Love in Romantic Painting (working title)
Based on Niklas Luhmann’s system-theoretical reflections on the semantics of intimacy, this PhD project examines depictions of love in European Romantic painting with a focus on their gender-specific coding. In doing so, the project also aims to identify commonalities between the different national manifestations of historical Romanticism in Europe. Therefore, the corresponding corpus of analysis, pulling from a range of European countries, includes paintings traditionally classified as Romantic that feature figures depicted in love attachments.
